Golden Gourmet breaks ground

Over 60 Americus and Sumter County leaders joined members of the Americus Sumter Payroll Development Authority and Golden Gourmet to announce the creation of 65 new jobs for the community.  Golden Gourmet, a leader for senior nutritional care, broke ground on a new facility to house production lines.  Under the leadership of Norman Graves, CEO, Golden Gourmet will be comprise $4m in capital investment, and  operate in a 48,000+ square foot facility to be built on ten acres of land in the Ted Baldwin Business and Technology Park. 

 Golden Gourmet has a history or strong leadership in the senior community, providing nutritionally balanced meals and services to meet the needs of many citizens, including those who are homebound.  Golden Gourmet will allow for the expansion and continuity of these services. 

Barbara Grogan, Executive Director of Payroll Development Authority, introduced many of the attendees, which represent the vast array of state and local resources available to assist companies as they grow and evolve to meet consumer demand.  Per Grogan, “the people here today are your community.  The City of Americus, Sumter County, the Chamber, South Georgia Tech, the PDA, GA Departments of Labor, Economic Development, and Community Affairs – these are our partners.  We work together to support business and industry and are glad to have a partnership with Golden Gourmet. We are strong because our businesses are strong.”

Graves shared that Shane Lee will serve as the General Manager for Golden Gourmet, and Ira Kelley, a local builder, will handle the development of the property.  “I want to thank the PDA and the Chamber of Commerce for making this possible. It doesn’t get much better than this than to find a place right across the road from your people.  I want to thank our state legislators for working to making Georgia the #1 state in which to do business.”

Per Graves, “Golden Gourmet currently serves over 6 million meals a year to seniors, and distributes all over the US. They are the 4th largest producer in this segment (senior citizen meals).

This venture will have a significant impact on our economy and will produce the highest quality, nutritional meals for seniors. We want to be the #1 provider of senior citizen meals in the US.”

Wally Summers, VP of Economic Development at South Georgia Technical College, pledged the support of South Georgia Technical to address whatever needs the company may have – from equipment operators to culinary arts.

Jay Roberts of the Chamber of Commerce welcomed Golden Gourmet to the community and thanked them for choosing Americus and Sumter County to call their home.

State Representatives Mike Cheokas and Ed Rynders showed their support and appreciation to the company.  Per Rynders, the state of Georgia played just a small part in this partnership. It’s the great leadership of the PDA and Chamber that partner together to make things happen.   

Cheokas shared that the joy of being a part of rural Georgia is to see companies come into our community, putting our graduates to work. Thanks to the company for providing nutritional meals for our seniors. It is important that we give the very best to our mamas, daddies, grandmamas and granddaddies.

Americus Mayor Barry Blount and Sumter County Commissioner Clay Jones shared their appreciation to the company, thanking them for not only adding to the tax base, but also creating additional jobs for Americus and Sumter County, as well as working with local contractors like Mr. Kelley to build the facility. 

Golden Gourmet began construction in November of 2014, with plans to complete within 12 months.
